Heddlu Bach

On Tuesday 15th June 2021, Heddu Bach (Mini Police) was launched at Coed-y-Garn Primary.

After a very successful round of interviews, all children swore the oath of allegiance, and became members of the nationwide Heddlu Bach team. They have joined a fun and interactive volunteering programme which is delivered jointly by Gwent Police and school, for children aged between 9 to 11 years old.

What is Heddlu Bach?

The Heddlu Bach scheme is a program delivered jointly between Gwent Police and school. It is a fun and interactive volunteering opportunity that supports the forces priorities, through participation in both educational and community environments. School children between 9-11 years old can be involved and will be given the opportunity to develop confidence through many enjoyable experiences.

Heddlu Bach aims to work with young people to promote and deliver on:

  • Inspiring trust & confidence within communities
  • Helping to protect communities & the vulnerable
  • Communicate to reassure communities
  • Working in collaboration with communities & external partners
  • Target young people with early intervention
  • Educate young people on work that the police & partners agencies do

What do members of Heddlu Bach do?

Heddlu Bach children help to tackle local issues, which are highlighted by the children, in their own community. This is achieved by assisting the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams, in crime prevention initiatives and taking ownership of the tasks.

During the programme, Heddlu Bach children have educational lessons on topics such as cybercrime, stranger danger and bullying. Some of the topics being explored by the Heddlu Bach at CyG include:

Basic Life Skills

Parking outside school

Speed monitoring

Anti-Social behaviour awareness

Littering in the community

Team building

Our Heddlu Bach members are able to demonstrate that they are becoming ethically informed citizens of Wales as they collaborate with others and take a keen interest in their community.
