Anti-Racist School

At Coed-y-Garn, we are not only committed to zero tolerance of racism, but we aim to promote anti-racism, teaching a curriculum which all children can relate to.

Staff are committed to being anti-racist as opposed to non-racist; we are not only undertaking DARPL professional learning, but are working with our cluster to ensure that this is a cluster based approach which will benefit the community in which we all serve. At CyG we welcome the breadth and diversity of tradition, belief and culture of our community.

Anti-racism moves beyond the promotion of equality and diversity and ‘not being racist’ to actively opposing racism and being an advocate for individual, institutional and systemic change.

All pupils have the right to be treated with respect and to feel safe with regard to their individual ethnic background and identity. At CyG, we advocate Article 30: Children have the right to practice their own culture, language and religion - or any they choose.  We also promote that children have the responsibility to respect other cultures, languages and religions.

Curriculum for Wales offers all schools in Wales a unique opportunity to explore our cultural heritage and diversity, our languages and values, and our histories and traditions of our communities. In order to develop a strong sense of identity, to support wellbeing, and make connections with people, places, and histories elsewhere in Wales and across the world, our curriculum design ensures that pupils will be supported to develop their Cynefin.

Cynefin is a Welsh word that signifies the multiple, intertwined factors in our environment and our experience that influence us: how we think, interpret, and act. Cynefin is a Welsh word meaning "haunt", "habitat", "acquainted", "accustomed", and "familiar".

It is important for this to be inclusive, and at CyG, we will draw on the experiences, perspectives, and cultural heritage of contemporary Wales.
